Oil tanker Southern Star 7 Sunk near at Sundarban:

Oil tanker Southern Star 7 Sunk at  near Sundarban Shela River:

Dec 15, 2014 (revision):  An oil spill from a crashed tanker in Bangladesh is threatening endangered dolphins in the vast Sundarbans delta, officials warned Thursday, calling it an ecological “catastrophe”. The tanker was carrying an estimated 357,000 litres (77,000 gallons) of oil when it sank in the Sundarbans’ Shela river, home to rare Irrawaddy and Ganges dolphins, after colliding with another vessel on Tuesday.
photo of Oil tanker Southern Star 7 Sunk at near Sundarban Shela River
The accident occurred inside one of three sanctuaries set up for the dolphins, said Rubayat Mansur, Bangladesh head of the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society. Rescue vessels have now salvaged the tanker, but officials said the damage had been done as the slick had spread to a second river and a network of canals in the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest, which straddles India and Bangladesh.

“It’s a catastrophe for the delicate ecology of the Sundarbans,” the area’s chief forest official Amir Hossain told newsmen. “The oil spill has already blackened the shoreline, threatening trees, plankton, vast populations of small fishes and dolphins.” Hossain said the oil had spread over a 60-kilometre-long (37-mile-long) area of the Sundarbans.

Spread over 10,000 square kilometres (3,800 square miles), the Sundarbans is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site and home to hundreds of Bengal tigers. The delta comprises a network of rivers and canals. Mansur said Bangladesh’s coastal areas including the Sundarbans were the “largest known home” of the Irrawaddy dolphins.

“Irrawaddy Dolphins can be found in South East Asia. But their population size is very small compared to Bangladesh,” said Mansur. Bangladesh set up sanctuaries in the Sundarbans in 2011 after studies showed there were hundreds of endangered Irrawaddy and Ganges river dolphins there. Fishing is banned, but tankers and other boats are allowed to pass through.
- UN urges ban -

Speaking to AFP from the accident site, Mansur labelled the spill a “national disaster” and accused authorities of not doing enough to contain the damage.

“There are no coordinated efforts to tackle the disaster. The air has become toxic and we got news from fishermen they’ve seen dead fish. Crabs, which make up the largest single group in the forest are facing the biggest threat,” he said.

“And if crabs are hit, the dolphins and tigers will be affected. Dolphins will find it very difficult to breathe this foul air,” he added. Authorities have launched a small-scale clean-up, but warned they lack the hardware and experience for a major effort.

“The tanker has been dragged to the shore. Two tanks housing 120,000 litres of oil remained intact, but the other four tanks with two-thirds of the ship’s 357,000 litres of oil have already been spilled,” shipping ministry spokesman Rafiqul Islam told AFP. Islam said a government ship carrying 10,000 litres of oil dispersants would reach the spot within hours to begin a more substantial clean-up.

“The oil dispersants would break the spilled oils into droplets,” he said, adding authorities have banned ships from using the Shela river channel until further notice. Bangladesh’s state-run petroleum corporation was also using buoys to restrict the slick, while local fishermen have been ordered to use nets to try to stop the oil entering small canals. The United Nations urged the government to impose a complete ban on commercial vessels in the Sundarbans.

“The oil spill happened near the Chadpai Wildlife Sanctuary, the largest aquatic protected area declared by the Bangladesh government and home of two threatened dolphin species,” said the head of the UN Development Programme in Bangladesh Pauline Tamesis.

“Global experience shows that this kind of incident has long-term environmental consequences.”

History:
The 1971, Bangladesh Liberation War (Bengali:Muktijuddho) was a war of independence, which resulted in the secession of East Pakistan from the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and established the sovereign nation of Bangladesh. The war pitted East Pakistan and India against West Pakistan, and lasted over a duration of nine months. One of the most violent wars of the 20th century, it witnessed large-scale atrocities, the exodus of 10 million refugees and the Killing of 3 million people, where approx 2,00,000 female were raped by the Military of Pakistan. It's till now the world worst deeds from a country to another country like Bangladesh. Bengali Nations will never forget this inhuman activities of Pakistan.

Mitro Bahini Order of Battle December 1971:
The Indian Army had no standby force ready in 1971 with the specific task of attacking East Pakistan, one of the many reasons why India did not immediately intervene after Pakistan launched Operation Searchlight in March 1971. Indian Army Eastern Command was tasked with defending the northern and eastern borders and fighting the insurgencies in Nagaland, Mizoram and Naxalites in West Bengal at that time. Mukti Bahini, aided by the Indian army through Operation Jackpot, led the struggle against the Pakistan army while the Indian army readied for intervention. General M. A. G. Osmani, Commander in Chief Bangladesh Forces, had divided Mukti Bahini forces into 11 geographical sectors for command and control purpose.

Mukti Bahini forces numbered 30,000 regular soldiers (including 3 brigades containing 8 infantry battalions and 3 artillery batteries) and at least 100,000 guerrillas by December 1971. The Indian Army Eastern Command assembled two existing infantry corps, the IVth and the XXXIIIrd, for operations in Bangladesh, and created a new corps (II) besides reorganizing the 101st Communication Zone as a combat formation. On 21 November 1971, Indian and Bangladesh forces were put under a joint command structure, led by Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora, and this force came to be known as Mitro Bahini. In addition to 29 BSF battalions, Mukti Bahini guerrillas operating near the border or awaiting deployment in camps inside India were organized into infantry companies and attached to various Indian formations. The Mitro Bahini Order of Battle on 3 December 1971 was. Read more about 43 years of National Victory Day of Bangladesh Today.

On 16 December 1971, Lieutenant General Amir Khan Niazi, CO of Pakistan Armed Forces located in East Pakistan signed the Instrument of Surrender. The Instrument of Surrender was a written agreement that enabled the surrender of the Pakistan Eastern Command in the Bangladesh Liberation War, and marked the end of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 in the Eastern Theater.

Surrender:
The surrender took place at the Ramna Race Course in Dacca(currently named as Sohorawadi Gardern, Dhaka near Dhaka University) on December 16, 1971. Lieutenant General Amir Khan Niazi and Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora, Joint Commander of Indian and Bangladesh Forces, signed the instrument amid thousands of cheering crowds at the race course. Air Commodore A. K. Khandker, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, and Lieutenant General J F R Jacob of the Indian Eastern Command, acted as witnesses to the surrender. Also present were Vice-Admiral Mohammad Shariff, commander of the Pakistani Naval Eastern Command and Air Vice-Marshal Patrick D. Callaghan of the Pakistan Air Force's Eastern Air Force Command, who signed the agreement. On behalf of Bangladesh, Air Commodore A. K. Khandker acted as witness to the surrender. Lieutenant General Jacob Rafael Jacob, Chief of Staff of the Indian Eastern Command, along with the other commanders of Indian naval and air forces, acted as witnesses on behalf of India. Aurora accepted the surrender without a word, while the crowd on the race course started shouting anti-Niazi and anti-Pakistan slogans.

Recognition of Bangladesh:
The Surrender of Pakistan Armed Forces marked the end of the Bangladesh Liberation War and the creation of Bangla Desh (later reduced to a single word). Most United Nations member nations were quick to recognize Bangladesh within months of its independence.

Celebration:
The celebration of Victory Day has taken place since 1972. The Bangladesh Liberation War became a topic of great importance in cinema, literature, history lessons at school, the mass media, and the arts in Bangladesh.
The ritual of the celebration gradually obtained a distinctive character with a number of similar elements: Military Parade by Bangladesh Armed Forces at the National Parade Ground, ceremonial meetings, speeches, lectures, receptions and fireworks. Victory Day in Bangladesh is a joyous celebration in which popular culture plays a great role. TV and radio stations broadcast special programs and patriotic songs. The main streets are decorated with national flags. Different political parties and socioeconomic organizations undertake programs to mark the day in a befitting manner, including the paying of respects at Jatiyo Smriti Soudho, the national memorial at Savar near Dhaka.

Events commemorating Victory Day:

1971: State Bank of Pakistan became Bangladesh Bank.

1972: The constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh was enacted on 16 December.

1973: Gallantry awards of war were declared by Bangladesh Gazette on 15 December.

1996: Silver jubilee of victory was celebrated.

2007: The remains of Bir Sreshtho Matiur Rahman were brought back to Bangladesh on 10 December.

Typhoon Hagupit: Storm nears to Philippine capital Manila

Typhoon Hagupit: Storm nears to Philippine Capital Manila

Storm nears to Philippine capital Manila

Tropical storm Hagupit is heading to Manila, but has been downgraded from a typhoon after crossing the country.

At least 21 people were killed by the storm, the Red Cross said, with the eastern island of Samar worst hit, but it caused far less damage than feared.

Thousands of people are heading home after about a million people were evacuated from vulnerable areas.

The city of Tacloban, which bore the brunt of Super Typhoon Haiyan last year, has emerged relatively unscathed.

Typhoon Hagupit: Storm nears to Philippine capital Manila

Albay province, which evacuated more than half its population, has called for those people to go home.

After spending three days at a school in Polangi, families are packing into small military trucks, holding one or two plastic bags with the essentials they brought with them.

They worry about the state in which they'll find their homes but many are most worried about their rice fields, their only source of income.

One woman reached her house and found it flooded and uninhabitable. For her that means at least one more night in the evacuation centre.

In the capital, residents are preparing for heavy rain and strong winds.

The typhoon is still travelling westwards across the Philippines, and has weakened into a tropical storm, according to the Philippine meteorological authorities.

A government alert on Monday morning stated that residents of the capital and surrounding regions should expect winds of up to 100km/h (62mph) in the next 24 hours, and to prepare for possible flash floods, landslides, and storm surges of up to 2m. Read more news here.

Thousands who live along the coast and riverbanks were evacuated on Monday, reports said. A total of 11.8 million people live in the national capital region.

Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada said the city was "prepared and trained for this", but added: "It's the flooding that we are worried about."

Financial markets closed their doors on Monday along with schools and government offices. Flights and other public transport were halted.

Roller disco dance are back at Central Park`s Skate Circle

Roller disco dance are back at Central Park`s Skate Circle

Photo of Roller disco daning, NY City

The return of spring temperatures to New York City means outdoor weekend roller discos are back at Central Park`s Skate Circle.

For the next six months, anyone comfortable on wheels can join (or watch) the Central Park Dance Skaters twirling, grapevining and displaying ankle bone-defying footwork around a 150ft stretch of dead-end road that serves as the makeshift rink.

Whether you’re lacing up or just observing from the sidelines, be prepared to boogie down. A rotating line-up of DJs provides the flavour for the four-hour afternoon jams, with a solid stream of house, funk, R&B or anything else with a good groove.

Indeed, the tunes are essential to the event, which was founded in 1995 after a ban on amplified music temporarily put an end to the dance skate gatherings in the park – a fixture going back to the late 1970s. While an agreement was being reached with the New York City Parks Department to bring sound systems back, a dedicated group of skaters maintained their weekly ritual – silent-rave style – all wearing headphones tuned to the same radio station.

The Skate Circle, located east of Sheep Meadow and west of the Naumburg Bandshell and the Mall, is a bring-your-own-skates affair. Starting 5 May, however, The Skate Truck NYC, a mobile skate-rental operation, will set up shop nearby two weekends a month. Traditional skates and rollerblades – 150 pairs total – are available, and protective gear and a five-minute lesson are included in rental prices (private lessons can also be scheduled).

If you’re new to skating or feel a little wobbly, lessons or practicing on your own is recommended, because as Bob Nichols, president of Central Park Dance Skaters Association (CPDSA), pointed out, there are no walls to cling to at the Skate Circle. “Know the basics – how to skate forward, turn, stop and slow down,” he advised. “Skaters are friendly. They’ll help you out.” Read more..
